Sorsogon PDRRMC Disaster Preparedness Cluster Emergency Meeting

Bulusan, the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (SPDRRMC) convened an emergency meeting on January 15, 2024. Governor Edwin “Boboy” B. Hamor, SPDRRMC Chairperson, presided over the meeting, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The gathering brought together key stakeholders, including the Sorsogon Provincial Health Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Bureau of Fire Protection Provincial Office, Philippine National Police – Sorsogon Police Provincial, and the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officers from Casiguran, Juban, Irosin, Bulusan, Barcelona, and Gubat.

The highlight of the meeting was the comprehensive update provided by Resident Volcanologist, Ms. April Dominguiano. Ms. Dominguiano presented the latest information on the status of Mt. Bulusan, including any observable changes in volcanic activity. Her report delved into the current state of the volcano, potential risks, and the need for enhanced monitoring measures.

In response to the critical information presented by Ms. Dominguiano, the SPDRRMC, alongside other key agencies, engaged in extensive discussions on formulating a comprehensive Preparedness Plan for a potential Bulusan Volcano eruption. The plan aims to establish effective coordination, communication, and response strategies to mitigate the impact on the communities surrounding the volcano.

The plan includes provisions for evacuation procedures, emergency shelters, medical response teams, and the mobilization of resources to affected areas. Ensuring the safety and well-being of residents remains a top priority, and the collaborative efforts of various government agencies reflect a commitment to proactive disaster management.

The presence of key government offices underscored the importance of a unified response to potential disasters. Representatives from the Provincial Health Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Bureau of Fire Protection Provincial Office, Philippine National Police – Sorsogon Police Provincial, and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices from Casiguran, Juban, Irosin, Bulusan, Barcelona, and Gubat actively participated in the discussions.
